LESVOS VOLUNTEERS

HOW TO HELP REFUGEES IN LESVOS, GREECE?

ABOUT US

Who are “we”? Where are “we”?
All of us are volunteers collaborating in various teams across different areas of Lesvos.

On Lesvos’s northern coast, a number of incredible teams are hard at work. As they come by boat, they supply the migrants with footwear, dry clothing, raincoats, sleeping bags, food, medical assistance, information, transportation, and more.

NGO AGALIA IN KALONI

The municipality of Kaloni provides refugees en route to Mytilini port with assistance from the NGO AGALIA, including shelter, food, clothing, transportation, and an abundance of compassion from a tiny but mighty team! Add them as a Facebook friend!

SOLIDARITY KITCHEN “O ALLOS ANTHROPOS” IN MITILINI

Thousands of refugees are being fed by this group in town, at the dock, and in the camps. Following them on Facebook will keep you updated on when and where they will be cooking. Kostas Polichronopoulos came up with the idea for “O Allos Anthropos – solidarity kitchen” in Athens. Check out their website!

THE VILLAGE OF ALL TOGETHER AND PIKPA CAMP IN MITILINI

“Village of all together” was established in Lesbos in 2012 in response to the need for a solidarity network addressing the impacts of the economic crisis. It also aimed to serve as an organised effort to protect the local population from becoming targets of the Golden Dawn’s propaganda.

In contrast to other non-governmental organisations, the “Village of all together” functions as a network comprising citizens, collectives, groups, and various organisations in Lesbos, united by a shared objective to collaborate effectively.

In September 2012, while hundreds of refugees endure inhumane conditions at the police stations of Lesbos or are left exposed to potential racist attacks, the “Village of all together” appeals to the municipality of Mitilini to permit the use of the abandoned summer camps in Neapoli as a hospitality centre for the refugees. This initiative by the “Village of all together” upholds the refugees’ right to fair treatment while also encouraging the establishment of open hospitality centres to support the local community.

PIKPA operates as a self-managed autonomous space and does not receive any state or European funding. This self-managed space has accommodated over 6,000 refugees during this period, with some staying for just a few days while others have resided here for up to a year.

The refugees consist of asylum seekers, family reunification applicants, and vulnerable groups among the newly arrived, such as individuals with disabilities, those who are ill, and pregnant women. We provide food, clothing, medicines, hygiene products, legal counselling, and medical assistance. Additionally, we organise activities for children and offer classes in Greek and English. Occasionally, we also assist with transportation expenses and provide social support.

IT’S RAINING! Please give us rain ponchos! We need tents! We need clothes that will keep us warm and cosy! Someone needs to help us sort them and give them out!
